A devastating road accident at Peki-Tsame in the Volta Region has left 15 people dead and 25 others injured after a passenger bus and a container truck collided head-on in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The fatal crash occurred near Peki Senior High School and involved a Mercedes-Benz container truck, registration number WR 1553-C, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra, and a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus, registration number GR 3215-E, travelling from Battor to Kabiti in the Oti Region.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), 40 people were involved in the accident, including 21 men, 15 women and four children.

Firefighters from the Peki Fire Station responded promptly to the scene and carried out rescue operations to free victims trapped in the wreckage. Twenty-five injured persons, made up of 23 adults and two children, were rescued and rushed to the Peki Government Hospital for medical attention.

Sadly, 15 victims, nine men and six women  were pronounced dead. Their bodies were handed over to the Ghana Police Service and transported to the mortuary at the Peki Government Hospital for preservation and identification.

Authorities have commenced investigations to determine the cause of the collision.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety on Ghana’s highways, where speeding, risky overtaking and driver fatigue remain major contributors to fatal crashes.

The Ghana National Fire Service extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to comply with road traffic regulations and exercise caution while driving.

The Service further appealed to road users to avoid reckless driving practices in order to help reduce accidents and protect lives.
