A 20-year-old man, Kombat Yaw Yiremiah, has drowned while reportedly helping travellers cross a river separating Ghana and Togo at Tambalug in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Yiremiah was assisting travellers to cross the river when he drowned. His body had not been recovered as of Monday, August 17.

Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with community members and relatives, are searching the river for his body. The Tempane District NADMO Director, George Alale Akuka, said the search team had covered a considerable distance but had yet to locate him.

According to the family, Yiremiah regularly assisted travellers, including Togolese nationals and people travelling from various parts of Ghana, to cross the river between the two countries.

The family and residents have appealed to the authorities to provide professional rescue personnel and appropriate equipment to support the recovery effort.
