The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has introduced a GH¢200 cash reward for individuals who submit credible video evidence of people dumping refuse into drains and waterways during rainfall.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced the initiative as part of efforts to reduce flooding in the capital, which is often worsened by indiscriminate waste disposal blocking drainage systems.

Under the scheme, the reward applies per offender identified, meaning individuals who capture multiple culprits could earn higher amounts. For instance, reporting five offenders with sufficient evidence could yield up to GH¢1,000.

The Mayor urged residents to provide clear and complete video evidence, stressing that partial or unclear footage would not be sufficient for enforcement action.

He noted that the Assembly already has several cases under review but requires strong, usable evidence from the public to support prosecution.

The initiative comes as Accra continues to grapple with recurring flooding, with blocked drains filled with plastic waste and debris identified as a major contributing factor.

Authorities and environmental experts say that while infrastructure improvements are necessary, changing public behaviour remains crucial to addressing the problem sustainably.
