The lead investigator in the ongoing Tano Nimiri illegal mining case has told the Accra High Court that Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, allegedly directed mining activities within the protected Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve without the required authorisation.

Chief Inspector Eugene Akpo Glover, the third prosecution witness, made the allegation during cross-examination on Tuesday, stating that investigations revealed mining operations were carried out in the forest reserve without the necessary legal permits.

Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, are facing multiple charges related to alleged illegal mining activities in the protected area.

The case, which has attracted significant public and political interest, remains before the Accra High Court, with the prosecution expected to call additional witnesses as proceedings continue.
