Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has attributed the ongoing water shortages in parts of the Greater Accra Region to the shutdown of the Teshie desalination plant and major leakages along key transmission pipelines.
According to the company, legal and maintenance issues involving the owners of the Teshie desalination plant have kept the facility out of operation since October, disrupting water supply to Teshie, Nungua, Spintex and surrounding communities.
GWL said it has been forced to redistribute limited water supplies to affected areas, resulting in rationing across several communities, including Ashaiman, Gbetsile, Zenu, Kpone, Prampram and Katamanso. Residents in Teshie and Nungua are currently receiving water only twice a week.
The company also revealed that inspections of transmission pipelines from Kpone to Tema uncovered extensive leakages, with only 40 to 60 per cent of pumped water reaching consumers. Engineers identified several damaged sections, while illegal pipeline punctures by some farmers for irrigation were also cited as contributing to water losses.
GWL says efforts are ongoing to address the challenges and improve water supply to affected communities.
