Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, following his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command. He is expected to reappear on September 2, 2026, as police investigations continue.
The former boxer reportedly reported himself to the police after being invited over a social media video in which he was allegedly seen threatening Ampofo Ankrah. He was subsequently arrested and processed for court after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for his arrest and prosecution.
The GBIMC has described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers, which could have further consequences for his position within the boxing community.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information as investigations into the alleged threat remain ongoing.
