A three-storey school building that collapsed over the weekend at the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School was an abandoned Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) project, according to officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The revelation came during a site visit by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang following the disaster on Sunday, March 29. NADMO officials informed the Vice President that the structure was initiated in 2012 but was left incomplete following the administration of the late former President John Atta Mills.

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak confirmed that the incident resulted in three fatalities, two women and one man, while 20 survivors were taken to the hospital for treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang expressed strong dissatisfaction that a state-funded educational facility had been left to deteriorate. Observers noted that her tone and demeanor reflected deep concern as she held local authorities accountable for the lack of proper supervision and maintenance of the project.
