Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has argued that the government’s two-day clean-up exercise is inadequate to address Ghana’s recurring flooding crisis, calling instead for a comprehensive national sanitation policy.
Speaking in Parliament on July 14, Afenyo-Markin said while clean-up campaigns play an important role in restoring communities after floods, they are only temporary measures and cannot resolve the underlying causes of perennial flooding. He said the devastating floods that struck parts of Accra and other areas on June 29 highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated strategy on sanitation, drainage management and flood prevention.
The Minority Leader recalled assurances by the Minister for the Interior that government would introduce a comprehensive policy to tackle flooding and urged authorities to move swiftly in implementing long-term solutions. He maintained that a well-planned national sanitation policy is essential to effectively address the country’s persistent flood challenges.
