The campaign of former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has dismissed claims of a rift between him and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s national chairmanship election on October 3, 2026.
The campaign said Mr Agyarko, who is seeking the chairmanship, has no intention of interfering with Dr Bawumia’s responsibilities as flagbearer. Instead, it said his focus would be on strengthening the party’s organisational structures, rebuilding trust and uniting its various factions ahead of the 2028 general election.
In a statement, the campaign also defended Mr Agyarko’s longstanding service to the NPP, dating back to 1992. It cited his roles in the party’s diaspora structures, his service as National Campaign Manager ahead of the 2012 election, and his later work as Policy Adviser to the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2016 election.
The campaign stressed that these contributions should not be interpreted as Mr Agyarko claiming personal ownership of the NPP’s electoral successes, which it said were achieved through the collective efforts of the party’s grassroots, members and supporters.
It also rejected suggestions that Mr Agyarko’s chairmanship bid was intended to position him for another political office. According to the campaign, his independence would enable him to serve as a neutral figure capable of reconciling competing interests within the party.
The campaign further placed party unity at the centre of his bid, arguing that the NPP must bring together supporters of the various candidates who contested the party’s presidential primary behind Dr Bawumia ahead of 2028.
It said Mr Agyarko’s experience and longstanding commitment to the party make him well positioned to strengthen the NPP’s structures, reconcile factions and mobilise the party’s full support base for the next general election.
