President John Dramani Mahama has described the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo Dam enclave as an opportunity to modernise Ghana’s power infrastructure. The incident, which affected a substation operated by Ghana Grid Company, disrupted electricity supply nationwide after more than 1,000 megawatts of power was lost from the national grid.
During a visit to assess the damage, Mahama indicated that the setback provides a chance to replace outdated systems with a more advanced control facility to improve long-term efficiency and reliability. He also commended engineers for their swift response, noting that four turbines have already been restored, with efforts ongoing to bring the remaining units back online.
The President reaffirmed government support for key energy institutions, including the Volta River Authority, emphasizing their critical role in stabilising the country’s power sector. Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Jinapor confirmed that full restoration of all generating units is expected within the week.
