Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his condolences following the passing of Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, describing his reign as short but deeply impactful.
In a condolence message, Dr Bawumia praised the late King of Dagbon for his wisdom, patience, and leadership, saying he played a crucial role in promoting peace, unity, and development in the Dagbon Kingdom. He noted that Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II united divided families and helped heal longstanding divisions within the kingdom.
Dr Bawumia also reflected on the personal guidance he received from the late Ya-Na during his tenure as Vice President and as the NPP’s presidential candidate, describing his passing as a great loss to Dagbon and the nation.
Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II passed away today, July 13, 2026. Following his death, his son has been appointed Kampakuya Na to serve as Regent of the Dagbon Kingdom in accordance with Dagbon custom.
