Former Vice-President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of NDC branch organiser Prince Aboagye, who is facing charges over alleged false and offensive comments made about him on TikTok.
In a statement, Dr. Bawumia said he neither filed a complaint nor authorised anyone to initiate criminal proceedings against Aboagye, stressing that he does not support the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech-related offences. He argued that political leaders should counter falsehoods and insults with facts and dialogue rather than criminal prosecution.
Aboagye, who has been charged with publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace, has pleaded not guilty and was granted GH¢200,000 bail. Dr. Bawumia appealed for the charges to be withdrawn, saying he had forgiven the accused and emphasising that protecting freedom of expression is essential to strengthening Ghana’s democracy.
