A tragic armed robbery attack on the team bus of Berekum Chelsea has left one player dead and raised serious security concerns in Ghana’s football community.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, along the Goaso–Bibiani road near Ahyiresu as the team returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996. Berekum Chelsea had earlier suffered a 1–0 defeat at Dun’s Park in Samreboi.

According to reports, armed men blocked the road and opened fire on the team bus, forcing it to stop. Players and officials fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire. During the attack, forward Dominic Frimpong was shot and later died from his injuries at Bibiani Government Hospital.

In an official statement, Berekum Chelsea confirmed the ambush, noting that masked attackers armed with rifles intercepted the vehicle and fired as the driver attempted to reverse to safety.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of teams traveling across regions for league matches, with calls mounting for enhanced security on major roads.
