A court has remanded 33-year-old Latifa Salifu into police custody for 14 days over the alleged theft of a newborn from Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra.

The suspect, who appeared in court on Friday, February 20, 2026, was not made to enter a plea as prosecutors said investigations are ongoing. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Agyei Opoku, requested that she be kept in custody to allow police to complete their investigations. Defence counsel Dr. Hanusu Mohammed sought bail, arguing that his client is not a flight risk and has two young children to care for, but the court denied the request. She is expected to reappear on March 4, 2026.

According to police, the baby was reported missing on February 17 after an unidentified woman, allegedly dressed as a nurse, took the child from the post-natal ward under the pretext of administering medication and failed to return.

The suspect was arrested in the early hours of February 18 at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was found with a baby believed to be the missing child. Police said her claim that she had delivered at the hospital and was discharged due to a lack of beds could not be verified.

Investigations on the matterĀ  are stillĀ  ongoing.
