The Effutu Traditional Council has called on the government to caution Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, against making statements that could escalate tensions between the Effutu and Gomoa communities following deadly clashes at New Winneba.
The Chief of Staff to the Effutu Omanhene, Ebo Ghartey, urged political and community leaders to exercise restraint in their public statements as efforts continue to restore peace in the affected areas.
His comments follow remarks by A-Plus warning that residents of Gomoa could take collective action if the police fail to adequately protect them. The MP also suggested that residents could give the government a seven-day ultimatum to address the security situation, after which Gomoa chiefs would meet to adopt a collective position.
Mr Ghartey cautioned that such pronouncements could heighten tensions and undermine ongoing efforts to restore calm.
The appeal follows an attack at New Winneba in the Central Region that reportedly left three people dead and 19 others injured.
Speaking at a press conference in New Winneba, Mr Ghartey warned that the situation could deteriorate if political and community leaders fail to act responsibly.
The Chief of Effutu Ayipe, Nenyi Apraku, also urged politicians to use their influence to promote development and peaceful coexistence between the Effutu and Gomoa communities rather than make statements that could provoke further conflict.
Meanwhile, the Abusuapanin of New Winneba, William De-Carthia, has rejected claims that the three victims were killed by Effutu youth.
He described the allegation as false and called for a proper investigation into the deaths before responsibility is assigned.
The traditional authorities have therefore stressed the need for restraint, dialogue and a thorough investigation to prevent further escalation of tensions in the area.
