The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has proposed naming Ghana’s planned plastics legislation after the late Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in recognition of his efforts to combat plastic pollution.
EPA Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations, Prof Michael Ayamga-Adongo, said the legislation, which is being finalised to support the planned ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam food containers from January 2027, would serve as a lasting tribute to the late minister’s environmental advocacy.
He urged President John Mahama and Parliament to consider naming the proposed law the “Murtala Mohammed Law on Plastics in Ghana,” saying it would honour the minister’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and preserving the environment.
Dr Muhammed was among eight people who lost their lives in the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. The proposal comes as the nation marks the first anniversary of the tragedy.
