The Food and Drugs Authority has shut down 16 food service businesses in the Greater Accra Region for operating without valid Food Hygiene Permits, making good on a warning it issued to the public two weeks prior.
The closures were carried out on Wednesday, February 18, following a public notice the Authority had issued stating that, effective February 1, any non-compliant facility would face immediate shutdown.

Among the establishments closed were popular spots including The Cheesecake House, Dolce Frizzante, Onda, and Alora Beach Resort.
“Two weeks after our notice to the public… we have taken action,” the FDA said in a statement on its official Facebook page. “Today, 16 non-compliant food service establishments in Greater Accra Region… were shut down for failing to meet regulatory requirements.”
The FDA’s enforcement directive covers a broad range of food-related businesses beyond restaurants — including hotels, event caterers, traditional chop bars, snack bars, food vans, bakeries, online food vendors, and canteens operating within schools, hospitals, and offices.
The Authority said the action was aimed at safeguarding consumers and upholding standards across the food supply chain.

“We remain committed to protecting public health and ensuring that all food service providers operate in strict compliance with good hygiene practices,” the FDA stated.

The Authority called on food businesses yet to regularize their documentation to do so without delay. Closed establishments will remain shut until they have fulfilled all regulatory requirements and secured valid Food Hygiene Permits.
