A fire that broke out this morning has destroyed a boys’ dormitory room at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School in the Oti Region, leaving several students collapsing from exhaustion and panic as they attempted to save belongings.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. today, sweeping through the dormitory room and burning everything inside, including the roofing structure. By the time the flames were controlled, nothing in the affected room could be salvaged.
According to reports, the Ghana National Fire Service faced major challenges responding to the emergency because the district’s fire tender is currently out of service. Firefighters who arrived on the scene were unable to deploy an operational appliance and had to improvise in their efforts to manage the blaze.
The fire triggered widespread panic among students. Many rushed to help contain the flames or retrieve items from nearby rooms, with several collapsing due to fatigue, smoke inhalation, and anxiety.
School authorities, together with members of the community, moved quickly to assist and stabilise the affected students, all of whom have since received attention.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to begin, while school officials assess the full extent of damage and make temporary arrangements for displaced students.
