Ghana international Andre Ayew has stated that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) delayed its decision to part ways with former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.
According to the former NAC Breda forward, the German-trained manager ought to have been dismissed immediately after failing to secure Ghana’s spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Under Addo’s stewardship, the Black Stars missed out on qualifying for the tournament for the first time in two decades, triggering intense debate over his position.
Although Addo was ultimately relieved of his duties before the 2026 World Cup—where Carlos Queiroz temporarily succeeded him—Ayew contends the action was overdue.
“When it comes to [the sacking of] Otto Addo, it was a call that maybe should have happened a long way before,” Ayew said on a podcast hosted by former Nigerian international Mikel Obi. “I think when you are Ghana, and you don’t qualify for the AFCON, you can’t go further; that’s my point of view.
“I know him; I’ve played under him when he was an assistant and as a coach. But after that he was able to qualify us to the World Cup. So then, it balances.
“Then there was about five or six friendly matches just after then we lose all, and now it becomes a bit tangible and that is where I think everybody becomes important in this moment.”
Following the expiration of Queiroz’s contract last month, the GFA is currently searching for a new head coach ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
