The Ghana AIDS Commission says new shipments of antiretroviral (ARV) medicines are expected to arrive within the next three to four weeks amid concerns over dwindling stock levels across parts of the country.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, the Commission’s Director of Technical Services, Dr. Eric Nana Poku, acknowledged that ARV stocks at the Central Medical Store and some regional facilities have fallen below the recommended six-month threshold, although stock levels vary across regions.
He said procurement processes are underway and expressed confidence that the incoming supplies would help avert widespread stockouts. The Commission, he added, is closely monitoring distribution to ensure continuity of treatment, particularly for pregnant women who require routine HIV services.
Dr. Nana Poku also raised concerns over the growing promotion of unapproved products claiming to cure HIV/AIDS, describing the trend as alarming. He said the Commission is working with the Food and Drugs Authority to strengthen enforcement against illegal advertisements and the sale of unauthorised products while efforts continue to stabilise ARV supplies.
