The government has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing military coup in Guinea-Bissau, calling it a serious threat to democracy and an attempt to overturn the will of the electorate.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ghana is “deeply concerned” about the military takeover, which erupted just days after Guinea-Bissau held peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections on November 23.

The government noted that the coup has “disrupted” the electoral process and prevented the release of results expected on November 27, thereby stalling the country’s democratic progress.

Ghana is demanding the immediate restoration of constitutional rule and emphasises that any issues arising from the elections must be resolved through lawful, transparent, and peaceful means rather than force.

The statement also urges the protection of civilians and foreign nationals, particularly members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission in Guinea-Bissau, whose safety and safe passage must be assured.

With tensions escalating, Ghana is appealing to citizens of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

The government reaffirmed its support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they coordinate a regional response guided by existing protocols on democracy, governance, and constitutional order.
