The Government of Ghana has received the body of one of two Ghanaian nationals killed during recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, while efforts continue to repatriate the second victim. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this on Monday at Kotoka International Airport, where he welcomed a group of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa.
The minister assured the bereaved families that government is working closely with South African authorities to return the second body as soon as possible and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to pursuing accountability for the attacks. A minute’s silence was observed in honour of the deceased.
The returnees were evacuated following government arrangements for Ghanaians wishing to leave South Africa amid the violence. They were received by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security agencies, who will assist with immigration procedures and reintegration. Government says it remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad while maintaining diplomatic engagement with South Africa over the attacks and the safety of Ghanaian citizens.
