Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged Ghanaians living in Spain to take advantage of a newly introduced immigration amnesty aimed at regularising undocumented migrants.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community, she described the policy as a positive opportunity for eligible nationals to secure legal status and improve their living conditions. The amnesty, announced by Spanish authorities, is expected to benefit about 500,000 undocumented migrants who have lived in the country for at least five months before December 2025.

She assured that the Government of Ghana is ready to support citizens seeking to complete the process, while also encouraging them to maintain valid travel documents and comply with legal requirements.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa clarified that individuals with criminal records will not qualify for the programme. He disclosed that a designated police officer has been assigned to assist applicants in obtaining clearance from the Ghana Police Service, a key requirement ahead of the June 30 deadline.

The minister also addressed concerns beyond immigration, including the ongoing investigation into the death of a Ghanaian student in Latvia, assuring the community that efforts are being made to ensure justice.

Government officials said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to protect the welfare and interests of Ghanaians living abroad.
