The government has rolled out armoured buses on major highways across Ghana as part of renewed efforts to curb highway robberies and enhance the safety of commuters.

Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, disclosed that the specially equipped buses are operating under various transport company brands to assist security agencies in monitoring suspicious activities and tracking criminals along key transport routes.

Speaking during President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” citizens engagement programme in the Savannah Region, the Interior Minister said the initiative was already yielding positive results in the fight against highway crime.

He explained that highway robbery had long been a major security concern, particularly on isolated stretches where armed robbers attack travellers and steal their belongings.

According to him, the government, under the leadership of President Mahama, introduced the armoured buses as part of a broader strategy to strengthen surveillance and improve security on major roads across the country.

Muntaka revealed that the buses are regularly rebranded to resemble different commercial transport operators, including STC, VIP, and OA, making it difficult for criminals to identify them.

He noted that the covert operation has helped security personnel gather intelligence and apprehend suspected robbers operating on the highways.

The Interior Minister also commended the Inspector General of Police and his team for their ongoing efforts in combating highway crime, stating that several armed robbers had already been arrested through intensified security operations.

He expressed confidence that the intervention would significantly reduce robbery attacks and make Ghana’s highways safer for passengers and transport operators.
