The government has announced plans to expand access to tertiary education by establishing more public universities across Ghana, with a proposed GH¢100 million allocation to support the take-off of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) campus at Kenyase.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed that he has directed the Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to include the allocation in the 2027 funding formula, with the long-term goal of developing the Kenyase campus into a fully fledged public university.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to ensure every regional capital has a higher education institution focused on teaching, research and innovation. An Amoako Nuama Committee has been tasked with developing a roadmap for the establishment of additional public universities.
The minister also revealed that government is considering the creation of a National Teacher University, which would bring all 48 public colleges of education under a single university system. Peki is being considered as the proposed location, with final decisions expected after the committee submits its recommendations.
