The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is expected to announce new transport fares by the end of this week following the latest increase in petroleum prices.
The union says rising fuel costs, coupled with higher prices for spare parts, lubricants and taxes, have placed significant pressure on transport operators. It had earlier proposed a 30% fare increase but suspended the adjustment after the government announced a GH¢2 reduction in diesel prices.
According to the union, the expected reduction did not materialise during the August middle pricing window, while operating costs continued to rise. The latest fuel price increase has now renewed calls for an upward adjustment in fares.
GPRTU leadership is expected to assess the current pump prices before deciding whether to maintain the proposed 30% increase or adopt a lower adjustment. A final announcement is expected before the end of the week.
