The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that transport fares will remain unchanged after government introduced a temporary GH¢2 reduction in the price of diesel.
Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, welcomed the intervention, saying the reduction has restored fuel prices to the level they were when the union first proposed increasing transport fares. As a result, transport operators have agreed to suspend the planned fare adjustment while monitoring the next fuel pricing window.
He noted that although current fares will be maintained, the union may review its decision if fuel prices rise again.
The decision follows consultations between transport unions, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the Ministry of Transport, and government, which appealed for the suspension of the proposed fare hike during the one-month fuel relief period.
The diesel price reduction took effect on August 4 after President John Dramani Mahama directed the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to absorb GH¢2 on every litre of diesel to ease the burden of recent fuel price increases.
