The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the widespread power outage recorded across parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.

The fault, which occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal plants as part of protection measures to safeguard the stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.

GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, quickly isolated the affected line and began restoring electricity. Supply has since returned to some affected areas, while restoration efforts continue in communities still without power.

The company has apologised for the disruption and assured affected customers that technical teams remain fully mobilised to restore power safely and as quickly as possible. GRIDCo also urged the public to remain patient as it works toward full restoration.
