The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has defended a joint military campaign with the United States, stating the offensive is necessary to neutralize Iran’s nuclear and missile threats.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Gilad detailed the objectives of “Operation Roaring Lion,” which was launched on February 28. He identified three primary goals: preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, degrading its ballistic missile capabilities, and creating a path for the Iranian people to determine their own political future.

The Ambassador claimed the operation follows a 12-day confrontation in June that Israel believed had stalled Iran’s nuclear progress. However, he alleged that Iranian authorities recently resumed these efforts by moving critical facilities deep underground.

“When the intention to destroy the State of Israel meets the capability to do so, this is when we become nervous and act to pre-empt the danger,” Gilad stated.

Regional Conflict and Casualties

The Ambassador accused Iran of expanding the conflict to include Gulf states like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, as well as launching strikes toward Cyprus and Turkey to pressure Washington. He noted that Hezbollah joined the conflict on March 2, following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

As of March 4, Gilad reported that Iran had fired over 180 missiles and 120 drones at Israel, resulting in 11 deaths and 120 injuries. “We pay a price and we will continue to pay a price,” he said, noting the “stamina and resilience” of the Israeli public.

Impact on Ghanaian Peacekeepers

Addressing the 900 Ghanaian troops serving with UNIFIL in Lebanon, Gilad confirmed that Israel has requested UN units to remain in their bases to minimize risks during border operations.

Despite the escalation, Gilad maintained that the conflict is with Iran’s leadership, not its citizens. “We have nothing against the Iranian people,” he said. “They deserve the same freedom that people in Ghana and Israel deserve.”

The Ambassador indicated that the military campaign could continue for several weeks.
