Lamine Yamal sustained an injury while scoring the decisive goal in Barcelona’s narrow win over Celta Vigo, a result that increased their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points.
The 18-year-old successfully converted a 40th-minute penalty at the Nou Camp after being fouled in the area by Yoel Lago. However, immediately after beating goalkeeper Ionut Radu, the forward signaled to the sidelines and went down holding his left hamstring. Yamal was forced to leave the pitch assisted by medical staff and was replaced by Roony Bardghji.
The win puts the defending champions one step closer to another title with only six matches remaining in the season. Manager Hansi Flick now faces an anxious wait regarding Yamal’s availability for next month’s El Clasico against Real Madrid. National concerns also remain high for Spain, as the teenager is expected to be a key figure in the upcoming World Cup this June.
Yamal has been in elite form this season, recording 16 goals and 11 assists in league play. His rise follows a breakout performance at Euro 2024, where he was honored as the Young Player of the Tournament during Spain’s championship run.
“I hope [his injury] is for as few weeks as possible. Tomorrow he’ll be tested and we’ll see what it is,” said teammate Pedri. “I wish him the best of luck, and he should stay calm – he’s young and will surely recover well.”
