Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, has announced her intention to contest the upcoming parliamentary by-election in the constituency.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for Tuesday, March 3, following the death of the sitting MP, which resulted in a vacant seat. The decision, announced on January 16, 2026, is in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the EC to organise a by-election whenever a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 22, Hajia Adam said she was encouraged by appeals from constituents, party grassroots members and traditional leaders to continue the work of her late husband.

She described the late Mahama Naser Toure as a dedicated servant of the Ayawaso East Constituency and said her decision followed extensive reflection and consultations with community leaders.

Despite acknowledging the personal grief surrounding her decision, Hajia Adam said the support of chiefs, imams, youth leaders and opinion leaders in the constituency strengthened her resolve to serve.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has released guidelines for the conduct of its Ayawaso East parliamentary primary in the Greater Accra Region as part of preparations towards the March 3 by-election.
