The Controller and Accountant-General has transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as “Mahama Cares,” from salary deductions made from President John Dramani Mahama and his government appointees, according to Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
In a social media update on May 7, 2026, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department confirmed the deductions and the subsequent transfer of funds into the medical trust fund, which is aimed at strengthening healthcare financing in Ghana.
The contributions stem from a pledge made by President Mahama during the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, where he committed six months of his salary to support the initiative. He later directed all political appointees to contribute one month’s salary each to the fund.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu further noted that appointees who failed to comply with earlier asset declaration requirements were instructed to forfeit three months of their salaries, which were also directed into the fund as a penalty measure.
He added that the Controller and Accountant-General is making arrangements to transfer a final tranche of funds from remaining deductions linked to defaulting appointees.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, widely referred to as “Mahama Cares,” was established to support healthcare delivery and provide financial assistance for critical medical needs across the country.
