John Dramani Mahama has stated that Ghana has no direct control over the ongoing extradition proceedings involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, emphasizing that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the United States legal system.

Speaking at Jubilee House during a dialogue with civil society organisations, Mahama said it would be inappropriate to comment on a case being handled abroad, urging patience as due legal processes unfold.

The remarks follow Ghana’s formal request to the United States for Ofori-Atta’s extradition to face corruption-related allegations tied to his tenure between 2017 and 2024. The former minister is currently in the U.S., where he was reportedly detained over visa-related issues and is seeking permanent residency while contesting the extradition.

Legal proceedings in the U.S. have intensified, with a federal judge requesting supporting evidence from Ghana to justify the extradition request, underscoring the complexities of cross-border legal processes. Ghanaian authorities are now awaiting the outcome of the case within the American judicial system.
