President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Finance to release GH¢1 billion to pay contractors owed by the state since 2017, with payments expected to be completed before Christmas. The announcement was made on Sunday, December 21, at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project in the Bono Region under the government’s Big Push infrastructure initiative.

The President said the payments would cover verified and certified works carried out in previous years, noting that audits are ongoing to validate outstanding claims. He urged contractors to promptly submit the required documentation to avoid delays in receiving their payments.

Mr Mahama also assured that funds have been earmarked under the Big Push programme to resume and complete stalled infrastructure projects across the country. He described the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project as a major development boost for the Bono Region.

At the event, the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr Nana Freduah Agyemang Badu II, welcomed the project but called for strict supervision to prevent shoddy work. The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to clearing long-standing contractor arrears and reviving abandoned projects nationwide.
