Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku has reaffirmed that the initiative is intended to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) rather than replace it.
Speaking in an interview on Thursday, May 14, she said persistent public misconceptions about the programme’s purpose had made it necessary to clarify its role within Ghana’s healthcare system.
According to her, the NHIS remains the country’s primary health financing and insurance scheme, while the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is designed to provide targeted interventions and specialised healthcare support.
“Let me state clearly that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund complements the National Health Insurance; we simply do not duplicate them,” she stated.
She further explained that MahamaCares has a broader and more specialised mandate aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery alongside the NHIS, not taking over its core responsibilities.
Her remarks were intended to improve public understanding of the fund’s role in Ghana’s evolving healthcare financing framework.
