A man is in critical condition after his hand was severed during a violent confrontation involving cutlasses at Akyem Nkwanum New Market.
According to the Assemblyman for the Akyem Aboabo Electoral Area in the Birim Central Municipality, Emmanuel Appiah Kubi, the incident stemmed from a dispute between a security officer and workers at an illegal mining, or galamsey, site in the area.
Mr Kubi said tensions escalated after the security officer allegedly pulled a gun and shot one of the workers during the altercation at the mining site. The conflict later continued in town when some workers reportedly attacked the security officer in retaliation, leading to a violent cutlass fight.
During the clash, one individual suffered severe injuries, including the complete severing of his hand, and is currently receiving treatment in critical condition.
Reacting to the incident, security analyst Paul Boateng called for swift police action, urging authorities to arrest individuals seen openly wielding cutlasses and to apply the law equally to those carrying dangerous weapons.
Police are yet to officially comment on the incident.
