A 30-year-old man, Dominic Ofori, also known as “Fanta,” has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for his role in a 2022 robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti Region.

Ofori, who had been on the run for several years, was arrested on February 16, 2026. He pleaded guilty to robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and was subsequently sentenced by the court.

Police said the robbery occurred on March 20, 2022, after intelligence indicated that a group of armed men planned to attack a mining site to steal gold concentrate. Officers mounted an operation and laid an ambush at the location.

According to police, four armed suspects arrived at the site, fired gunshots and robbed miners of gold concentrate. Officers on surveillance intervened, leading to a gun battle.

Three suspects—Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi sustained gunshot wounds and were later pronounced dead at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital.

Ofori escaped during the incident but was later arrested and brought before the court. The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti South Region says it remains committed to tackling violent crime and ensuring offenders face justice.
