Mobile money transactions in Ghana surged to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, highlighting the growing dominance of digital payments in the country’s financial system, according to the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

The December figure, the highest monthly value recorded in 2025, was driven by increased consumer spending during the festive season and the continued expansion of mobile money usage. Transaction volumes rose to 982 million, up from 892 million in November.

Active mobile money accounts increased to 26.7 million in December, while registered accounts climbed to 80.5 million, reflecting ongoing gains in financial inclusion. The mobile money agent network also expanded, with 491,000 active agents recorded by year-end.

Balances in mobile money wallets reached a 2025 high of GH¢39.6 billion, indicating growing confidence in mobile wallets as a store of value. Interoperable mobile money transactions also strengthened, rising to GH¢5.8 billion from GH¢4.9 billion in November.

By comparison, traditional payment channels such as cheques and other electronic platforms recorded significantly lower transaction values, reinforcing mobile money’s position as the backbone of Ghana’s retail payments system.
