A task force from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has disrupted illegal mining activities at Kwabeng in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region, following intelligence reports of growing environmental destruction in the area.

The operation, carried out on Sunday, December 21, targeted an illegal mining site located behind the dormitory of Kwabeng Anglican Senior High School. During the raid, the task force observed miners washing extracted materials directly into the River Ewusu, causing severe pollution and threatening nearby communities and the water body.

As part of the enforcement action, three excavators and a pay loader were seized and transported to the NAIMOS equipment park for safekeeping. The task force also destroyed heavy-duty water pumping machines, mining tools and makeshift structures at the site, while removing key parts from other excavators to render them inoperable.

NAIMOS said the operation has effectively halted the illegal mining activities in the area and prevented further pollution of the River Ewusu, reaffirming its commitment to protecting Ghana’s environment and water resources through sustained enforcement efforts.
