Operatives from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) conducted a major crackdown on illegal mining along the River Tano on Sunday, April 4.

The operation, which took place between 0900 and 1530 hours, targeted a stretch of the river extending from Patoso to Adiembra within the Aowin District. During the exercise, the Enchi-based taskforce seized and destroyed various pieces of equipment used for “galamsey,” including “changfang” machines, tricycles, motorbikes, and pumping machines.

In addition to the destruction of equipment, the team confiscated six pumping machines and an excavator oil pump. Several unauthorized structures built at the mining sites were also demolished by the taskforce.

The exercise marks a resumption of intensified efforts by NAIMOS in the Western North Region. Taskforces have been stationed at Enchi and Dadieso with the specific mandate to clear illegal mining operations from the Tano and Bia rivers, both of which have suffered severe pollution due to illicit activities.
