The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed four striking tertiary education unions to return to negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the sector ministry and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) over unpaid salary arrears, Tier Two pension contributions and overtime allowances.

The Commission gave the parties one month to report progress on resolving the issues that led to the industrial action. The directive followed a meeting between the NLC, the unions and relevant stakeholders aimed at addressing the grievances.

The unions involved are the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).

The strike has been suspended after the NLC secured an interim injunction at the High Court. Presiding judge Priscilla Dikro Ofori ruled the action illegal and ordered the unions to call it off immediately. The injunction, granted on February 13, 2026, followed an ex parte application by the Commission.

The NLC said migration of upgraded staff onto the Single Spine Salary Structure was completed as of January 1, 2026, addressing concerns over salary arrears, while part of the outstanding Tier Two pension contributions had also been paid. It further noted that overtime allowances fall under categories negotiated by the Public Service Joint Standing Negotiating Committee.
