The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has defended plans to shut down garages involved in converting right-hand-drive vehicles to left-hand drive, describing the practice as illegal and dangerous.

A Technical Working Committee set up by the Authority found that converted vehicles, particularly the Toyota Voxy, pose significant safety risks due to structural modifications and their unsuitability for commercial use.

Amaliba stressed that such conversions violate existing laws and compromise road safety, warning that offending garages will be closed and individuals involved may face arrest.

The NRSA plans to collaborate with key agencies, including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and the Ghana Police Service, to enforce the directive. The Authority will also engage transport operators as part of a broader nationwide effort to regulate vehicle conversions and improve road safety.
