A joint Police and Military operation in Nkwanta in the Oti Region has led to the interception of a large quantity of ammunition and the arrest of two suspects following intelligence-led security operations.
The operations, conducted on May 17, formed part of ongoing efforts to combat the illegal transportation of arms and maintain peace in the area.
In the first operation, security personnel stationed at a checkpoint intercepted a 66-seater MGI passenger bus with registration number AS248-P. A search of the vehicle uncovered 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag and packed in three brown boxes containing 250 rounds each.
A 53-year-old driver’s mate identified as Hudu Mahama reportedly admitted ownership of the ammunition during initial interrogation.
In a separate operation on the same day, a joint task force pursued a motorbike rider suspected of transporting ammunition illegally. During the chase, a box reportedly fell from the motorbike while the rider escaped.
Security officers later retrieved the box and discovered 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges, bringing the recovered ammunition in that incident to 250 rounds.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of another suspect, 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise, in connection with the case.
The latest interceptions come amid intensified security operations in Nkwanta aimed at preventing the unlawful movement of weapons and safeguarding public safety.
