Parliament has approved spending estimates exceeding GHS5.3 billion for the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the 2026 financial year, covering the period ending December 31, 2026.
The allocation is expected to support the improvement of road infrastructure nationwide, aimed at boosting economic activity and easing the movement of people and goods.
The approval followed the presentation of a report by the Chairman of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, on the Floor of the House on Tuesday.
Mr Mensah said the Ministry would fill 137 staff vacancies across four agencies under its supervision in 2026 to strengthen operations.
He also disclosed that both ongoing and new road contracts were projected to create about 500,000 direct and indirect jobs, which could contribute significantly to employment generation and economic growth.
However, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, expressed concern about the failure to constitute the Board of the Road Fund.
He warned that the absence of the Board had delayed payments to some road contractors, a development he said could affect the timely execution of road projects across the country.
The approval forms part of government’s broader agenda to expand and modernise Ghana’s road network, as calls continue for stronger institutional support to ensure the effective implementation of infrastructure projects.
