The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a player of Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, who was alleged to have been sexually assaulted by his coach prior to his death.

A statement issued by the Police Public Affairs Directorate said the deceased’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported to the Amasaman Police that her son fell ill and died on February 28, 2025.

She further alleged that the boy had told her before his death that his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually abused him.

The case was subsequently referred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further investigation.

Police said suspect Anyass Ibrahim was arrested on November 4, 2025, and taken through interrogation. He provided a statement and was later granted bail, with instructions to report regularly to the CID Headquarters.

According to the statement, medical documents submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Kumasi indicated that the boy had been treated for liver- and kidney-related conditions before his death.

The Police noted that efforts are underway to obtain official medical reports from the two health facilities, as earlier requests were declined. A court order has now been secured to compel the release of the documents.

The Ghana Police Service said investigations are ongoing.
