Engineers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) risked their lives to restore electricity to parts of Ahodwo in Kumasi after a power outage on Wednesday, April 24, 2026, was traced to a faulty distribution line.

Residents along the Ahodwo–Daban–Dr. Asafo Adjei Road were left without power around 9 a.m. when the fault occurred. A response team from ECG’s Ahinsan District managed to restore electricity to some areas but encountered difficulties near the Cocoa Depot and Star Sawmill stretch.

While attempting to replace a fuse at a nearby transformer, the team discovered a large python occupying the substation. Efforts by residents to capture the reptile failed as it retreated beneath the installation.

Despite the danger, ECG engineers proceeded with repairs and successfully restored power. Officials from the Kumasi Zoo were later called in and discovered a second python at the site. Both snakes, along with their eggs, were eventually removed late that evening, suggesting they had been inhabiting the substation for weeks.

ECG’s Ashanti West Regional General Manager, George Amoah, urged customers to report outages promptly through official ECG channels, including WhatsApp platforms, to ensure quick response times.
