President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Nkoko Nketenkete Project, a nationwide initiative aimed at supporting small and medium-scale poultry farmers to boost local production and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported poultry products.
Launching the programme in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, President Mahama announced that government would distribute three million birds across all 276 constituencies under the project.
He said the initiative, being implemented through the Food Systems Resilience Programme, would support about 500 small and medium-scale poultry farmers across all regions.
“Government is going to distribute three million birds across all 276 constituencies of this country, with each constituency receiving 10,000 birds, benefitting approximately 60,000 households nationwide,” the President said.
He explained that each participating household would receive 50 birds, as well as technical guidance and key inputs to ensure the sustainability of their operations.
President Mahama said the project seeks to bridge the gap between large-scale commercial operations and community-based producers, strengthen rural livelihoods, and enhance food security.
He emphasised that through Nkoko Nketenkete, government aims to make poultry farming more inclusive, providing opportunities for both smallholders and medium-scale producers to thrive.
The initiative also seeks to address longstanding challenges in the sector such as high feed costs, limited access to improved breeds, and inadequate processing capacity.
President Mahama said government would continue to invest in modernising the poultry value chain — from production to market — to create jobs and stimulate economic activity, particularly in rural communities.
