The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has summoned the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to an emergency meeting following widespread complaints about the rapid depletion of prepaid electricity units.

The concerns emerged after the implementation of the latest tariff adjustments under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), with many consumers alleging that purchased prepaid credits are being exhausted faster than expected.

In response to the growing public outcry, the Commission has directed the Managing Director of ECG to appear before it on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 12:00 noon at the PURC GNAT Office in Accra. The MD has also been instructed to attend with key Technical, Commercial, ICT and Customer Service officials to ensure a comprehensive engagement.

According to PURC, the meeting will focus on a detailed technical briefing on the implementation of the revised tariff within ECG’s prepaid vending and metering systems. ECG is also expected to present a report on any system parameter changes, configuration adjustments or conversion logic updates linked to the MYTO review.

Additionally, the utility provider will be required to submit data on vending trends, meter update protocols, the scale and nature of consumer complaints, and measures being taken to address them.

The Commission said it will also consider immediate technical and communication interventions, if necessary, to protect consumer confidence and ensure regulatory compliance.
