The Ghana Police Service has arrested six students of Aggrey Memorial Senior High School in connection with a violent attack on a final-year student of Adisadel College following an inter-colleges sports festival in Cape Coast.
The victim, Rexford Owusu-Ansah, was on his way back to school with two friends after the closing day of sports activities at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday, February 20, 2026, when the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m.
Police say the group was stopped at Pedu Junction by the suspects, who reportedly asked whether they were Adisadel College students before attacking them. Owusu-Ansah’s two companions fled, but he was knocked to the ground and beaten. The attackers also made away with his iPhone 17 Pro Max, GH¢1,400 in cash, and his shoes.
He was first treated at the stadium clinic before being transferred to the Cape Coast Regional Hospital, where a medical report confirmed he had sustained a fractured bone around his right eye — an injury so severe he could not open the eye after the attack. He was discharged on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Authorities at Aggrey Memorial SHS moved quickly, turning the six juvenile suspects over to the Kotokuraba Police Station at around 7:30 p.m. on the same day of the attack. The two friends who escaped have indicated they can identify the assailants, giving investigators key leads in the case.
The Central Regional Police Command condemned the attack in a statement signed by Acting Head of Public Affairs, ASP Patrick Bentum.
“The Central Regional Police Command strongly condemns the violence and assures the public that due process will be followed as the juvenile offenders will face the full rigours of the law,” the statement read.
The six suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations, as calls grow for tighter security at inter-school events.
