Six students have been arrested following a violent attack on the Headmaster of Obuasi Secondary Technical School (SHTS), which left him critically injured and led to the temporary closure of the school.
The Obuasi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) ordered the immediate shutdown of the school after students reportedly attacked Headmaster Abdullai Zakaria with cutlasses over rumours that he had secretly buried an infant on the school premises.
Mr Zakaria sustained severe head injuries during the incident and was first taken to a hospital in Obuasi before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.
Authorities have begun investigations into the assault, the destruction of school property and the allegations that triggered the unrest. The attack reportedly resulted in the vandalism of parts of the school and the destruction of the headmaster’s private vehicle.
A heavy police presence has been deployed to the campus to restore calm, while academic activities remain suspended as security agencies continue their investigations.
The school’s management and authorities conducted a roll call before students were sent home to allow for a full assessment of the situation and further inquiries.
